COLUMBUS – Fourth-ranked Columbus North defended its Columbus East Regional title March 13, defeating No. 5 Hagerstown by over a point as each school advanced to the March 21 state finals.
On an evening that saw five different girls win events, Columbus North junior Chrissy Day was a model of consistency in finishing second in three events and fourth in another en route to capturing the all-around title. The other winners were Morristown senior Krista Berry (vault), Columbus East junior Allison Franklin (uneven bars), Hagerstown junior Caitlyn Catania (balance beam), and South Dearborn junior Abbey Gilb (floor exercise).
Columbus North advances five different girls to the state finals (they would have gotten there anyway due to the team title), led by Day’s top-three finishes in each event. Other Bull Dogs placing among the top six were hampered-by-injury junior Cassie Funcheon (third in bars, fifth in beam), sophomore Tessa Lane (third in beam), senior Andrea Whited (fifth in bars), and freshman Audrey Lewis (sixth in vault).
But it was Day’s balanced effort that paced Columbus North to its second straight regional crown and 10th overall (fifth-best in state history). The tall junior took second in the bars with a 9.375, second in the beam (9.35), second in the floor (9.5), and tied for third with a 9.45 in the vault.
Those efforts added up to a score of 37.675 in the all-around, just ahead of runner-up Catania (37.45).
